DOI
DOI (Digital Object Identifier) is a unique identifier of a digital object:
- provides permanent identification of the publication and stable storage of the article on the Internet;
- is used by almost all leading foreign publishers and journals;
- allows to accurately cite the article in reference lists and link the publication in international scientometric databases with references to it.
The presence of DOI in scientific publications significantly reduces the loss of references and guarantees the reflection of the real figures of the citation index.
DOI assignment is done by official registrars:
- Crossref – works with scientific periodicals, not only registering materials, but also checking their uniqueness.
- DataCite – works with various repositories, including libraries and repositories, so it does not check materials for uniqueness.
In order for an article to receive a DOI, it is necessary to publish it in the journal of a publisher whoch provides such a service (may be fee-based for the author). The identifier is assigned both to the whole article and to its separate parts.
